DOJ Official Mixes Up NBA Team Name During High-Profile Gambling Arrest Announcement

During Thursday’s major arrests linked to an FBI investigation into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games, a lighthearted gaffe caught attention.

Joseph Nocella Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, announced arrests involving NBA figures like Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier. While describing the case, he mistakenly referred to Toronto’s NBA team as the “Toronto Rangers” — a team that doesn’t exist.

This slip of the tongue sparked jokes online. While the U.S. attorney clearly meant the Toronto Raptors, some pointed out that the name “Rangers” belongs to MLB’s Texas Rangers and NHL’s New York Rangers.

Though minor, the mistake added a humorous twist to an otherwise serious announcement about organized crime and illegal sports betting.
